    1. While reading this cop novel, I couldn t help but think of FORT APACHE, THE BRONX, the 1981 movie starring Paul Newman I saw at the theater Since I m a big Newman fan, I found KING CITY to be an entertaining read Like FORT APACHE, KING CITY is about a satellite police station house set in the middle of the rough ghetto slum part of town Tom Wade is exiled to Darwin Gardens after blowing the whistle to the feds about his dirty fellow cops He s assigned two rookie cops and pretty much left out the [...]

    2. Tom Wade had committed an unpardonable sin He d worked with Federal authorities to expose corruption in the King City police force It made him a pariah and, if the chief could have worked it without repercussions, it would have gotten him fired As it was, it got him a lateral transfer to the Marvin Gardens side of town. The worst part of King City, forgotten by all but the people who lived there A lot of good people, a lot of bad people, none with any faith in law enforcement The Chief hoped he d [...]

    3. Tom Wade is a cop driven by doing what s right So while he s not beholden to every rule and law he s ever met, the corruption in the major crimes unit he s assigned is too much to overlook He secretly helps the justice department build a case against the others, and when their successful prosecutions are over and the dust settles, is promptly given a lateral move by a police chief who felt Tom should have come to him so things could be handled quietly Tom s sent into a part of King City so bad i [...]

    4. I did not want to put this down I love when authors can blend serious situations with humor I realized early on that I never should have picked this up during a weeknight So consider yourself warned, if you re thinking about starting this one, it might be a good idea to start thinking up a good reason to call into work the next day.Major Crimes Unit detective Tom Wade took down several of his fellow officers for corruption As a reward he lost everything Sent to the worst part of King City to cle [...]

    5. Straight talking, fast moving, cop thriller right out of the great US tradition of the genre The author, Lee Goldberg, is a veteran of crime drama on TV and in print and it shows This is crisply written with a heavy dose of black humour, and vivid characters Goldberg is hard at work on Tom Wade novels I m looking forward to them.

    6. Outrageous special effects sabotage a premise of high potentialAny author trying to repackage the classic western theme of a new sheriff in town needs to make a decision channel the dramatic vibe of Destry Rides Again or apply the comedic slapstick of Blazing Saddles In his new novel King City, television script writer Lee Goldberg appears headed for Destry but instead allows his addiction for special effects to hijack the narrative and ultimately set his saddles ablaze The result is the uninten [...]

    7. I liked this book because it was a lot of fun Lee Goldberg is a tv writer, and the book seems quite visual because of his descriptive writing The hero and the city are both down on their luck the hero by choice for going to the feds about corruption in the city s Major Crimes Unit, and the neighborhood due to closed factories and the resulting poverty Yet, with his unwavering efforts to do the right thing, the hero Tom Wade , returns law and order to the crime ridden area one step at a time, ass [...]

    8. King City effortlessly blends the archetypal gunslinger of the Old West, riding into the lawless town to clean up the bad guys, with a modern tale of police corruption, urban decay and neglect. It s a fast paced exploration of the decline of the blue collar industrial heartland of America, and the cop who will not stand by and let that happen on his watch Fans of the late Robert B Parker will delight in King City, which has the same great dialogue and nicely judged wry humour.A sit down, straight [...]

    9. I knew of Lee Goldberg from his TV work and lighter novelizations I m very glad I found this harder crime story via my friend Randy Johnson. This is a modern Western where pariah cop Tom Wade is sent to tame the worst neighborhood of this fictional gritty metropolis And tame it he does A fun ride I hope Goldberg will do of these.

    10. Good fast readA good fast read A police no ellis with some interesting settings and attempts to be original with con pets that might be clinched in someone elsse hands.

    11. The exposition can be a little clunky at times, but Goldberg s decades of experience as a TV writer shines through in the whip smart dialogue This is the most exciting franchise I ve read from him.

    12. Tom Wade did the unthinkable and turned in fellow cops who had become greedy and corrupt As a result he got assigned to run a satellite police station and was given two rookies to run it with him It was in the worst section of the worst end of town where previous officers had already met with death Wade faces the challenges head on and soon establishes himself as someone to be reckoned with The book is an easy read and I sincerely enjoyed it I hope Mr Goldberg turns this into a series because I [...]

    13. Whirlwind readFast moving with interesting characters I m already wondering who will be cast in the series Tom s story really can t end yet The rest of the characters seem to have their own stories not yet told Looking forward to the next book about King City or film.

    14. Very enjoyable readI really enjoyed the writing style, characters, and story An easy read, it wasn t too gory or gross Very entertaining.

    15. First ClassVery nicely plotted The story and the characters are superbly developed and the tension stays high The novel is highly recommended.

    16. It has to be tough to be a police officer under the best of circumstances Police honor demands silence within the ranks What do you do when you discover all the other officers in your department are corrupt, and not just pushing the boundaries of what is legal to bring about justice but actively committing crimes in order to line one s pockets.Tom Wade turned them in, and he worked two years obtaining evidence to convict all of them Two years later, all of the trials are completed Suffice it to [...]

    17. Boken BadgeTom Wade is thrown into a downward spiral, He loses everything to do what he thinks is right He makes a stand and his fellow men in blue fall under corruption For his loyalty to the honor of the badge he is shipped off to patrol one of the worst areas in the city.Along with him are two rookies he tries to teach the way of the city and getting respect from the dreads of society, the thrown away population. The story moves along at a frantic pace and one you can t wait to find out what d [...]

    18. One part Jack Reacher, one part Jesse Stone, this first installment in Lee Goldberg s new series reads like a Western set in the 21st century Tom Wade, a rigorously scrupulous cop is assigned to a part of King City so crime and poverty ridden that city officials pretend it doesn t exist He s sent there because the police force is overly politicized where it isn t overtly corrupted, and they can t fire such an upstanding cop but maybe his new post will lead to him being killed Wade is fully aware [...]

    19. Started this book 2 days ago and I am on Chapter 20 I love Lee Goldberg s Mr Monk , I was not sure how I would feel about his other writings The storyline solid, the plot solid, the characters solid, however the language of the book disappoints I am sure it is about the characters, but to me having to read a book with swearing in it takes away from the writing and the book So I am very disappointed, maybe because I am so use to the Monk books that did not have one swear word in them I have to tr [...]

    20. I d read a whole series of books with this lead character in a heartbeat Love the way the story came together, with the character building something out of nothing in both his personal and professional life Although this isn t a formal book review, I still have a strong desire to say it is a masterful juxtaposition of hope and despair throughout Absolutely loved and or hated the supporting characters, as we re meant to do, and enjoyed a terrific setting where I felt like I knew the neighborhood [...]

    21. Downloaded this one for the plane ride home after a long weekend All I wanted was a fun good guy beats bad guy tale, and on one level that s what I got I wasn t expecting to turn my brain completely off, though The protagonist was a laughably white washed knight in shining armor motivated by duty who changes not at all by the end of the story except that he s banging a different chick talk about wish fulfillment on the part of the author The conflicts are ill defined, the background characters t [...]

    22. Another fantastic Lee Goldberg book It was a hard call of whether this was a four or five star book, so 4.5 stars it is.There is a lot to enjoy about this book It moves at a reasonably fast pace, it has some interesting characters, there is a bit of humour thrown in for good measure and it harkens back to the westerns and Dirty Harry You really do get the image of the tough guy pulling up his collar against the cold as he strides across the street.I think the easiest thing to say about this book [...]

    24. Lee Goldberg writes the most readable books of anyone I ve ever read I can pick one up, read 4 pages and the story is imprinted on my brain so that I can wait a week to pick it up again and not miss a beat Plus the stories move The characters are good and well formed I just enjoy them enormously.King City is about a cop who is ostracized for revealing a corrupt major crimes unit He is banished to the worst neighborhood in town and makes the worst, the best.

    25. Fast moving story about a cop who brings down a whole group of corrupt cops and then is made to pay for his treachery by being assigned to an abandoned, crime ridden area of the city with two rookie cops.He s someone who gives no quarter and decides to make the best of things, despite having lost everything in his personal life except his faith in his badge. The odds are basically insurmountable, but he surmounts them with lots of luck and real determination.OK.

    26. Blend Sam Spade with Law and Order, and you get this book oh, and toss in every book about an honest cop standing up to corrupt peers and the department s hatred in response Lots of standard themes here, painted with a crude brush plot wise But great details on the characters, and a sense of love for them by the author in their depiction The characters make the story, and the pacing is perfect to keep you from putting it down once you get a few chapters in A fun page turner.

    27. The character, Tom Wade, is very intriguing and makes you want to keep reading His world view and the role he sees for himself in the world are the best features of the story Definitely a character I would want to read about in future novels Great story, intriguing characters, and well paced plot.

    28. Just what I needed.Having just finished a book with a disappointing ending, I found King City to be the perfect antidote to my lousy mood Yes, it depicts a black and white worldview of good vs evil, but the plot, characters, and humor buoyed my mood.Going to download of Mr Goldberg s books right now.

    29. I liked Lee Goldberg s collaboration with Janet Evanovich on The Heist so thought I d give him a try He s written a lot for tv, including the Monk series It was a good story felt like a tv show actually And a fast read just one day A good cop story with a sympathetic main character I ll have to try some of his others when I need some lighter reading.

    30. This is the perfect read for a seven state flight You won t notice the plane going down Its quick, it has some social commentary about how society treats some people as disposable and the ending is satisfying I was a little annoyed at how the romantic relationship played out He likes her because she doesn t ask for anything BARF.Still, I d recommend it Great summer reading
